Inorganic Chemistry and the biological sciences. The past decade has witnessed an explosive increase in our knowledge of many coordination compounds that are essential for life and maintenance of plants and animals. Life is dependent on inorganic and organic chemicals for their growth and survival. Of the 109 known elements/ 30 elements are believed to be essential for the survival of the living organisms. Nineteen of the 30 are trace elements/ of which 12 are transition metals. The story of the discovery of essential trace elements has been outlined by Schrauzer^. The essential trace element research has been also identified as bio-inorganic chemistry. The knowledge of biological function of trace elements has lagged far behind our understanding of their chemistry. Different functions of essential trace elements have been established by understanding, the speciation of essential trace elements in biological systems. A specific biochemical function is associated with a particular element and its deficiency can be relieved by proper supplement.
